On many occasions the lack of employee motivation is determined by poor design of work processes. In too many cases, the worker is limited to what is assigned, but not because they want to do more things, but because they do not leave.
Is another model?
As I said in several articles, the real motivation comes from inside the individual, when it feels useful, reaching certain goals, you are acknowledging your work, have certain responsibilities …
However, the mentality that prevails in the traditionally very different from this. Some feel they have invested too much time on creating rigid processes that now come to say that anyone should be given some freedom to work, could get up there!
Who is in a “traditional” fully recognize these symptoms: orders flowing from top to bottom, do not always know if one is doing a good job or not, many repetitive jobs and insignificant, the problems solved the heads, which are also those who have their ideas, not much importance is given to staff training (what, no need to let them be confined to what to do, period!).
Empowerment is to delegate the power and authority to subordinates, so they feel ownership of their work.
Companies that use empowerment know that it is possible that employees mistake, but so do the bosses. Thereforex, employees should be clear how they should act and what is the goal to achieve, and then have some freedom to do so. In a way, one could say that the worker knows to determine what means he used.
Thus, companies that use this tool, employees feel their work is important, they have some authority to act on behalf of the company, participate in decision making, provide ideas and solutions, they are recognized, and develop their knowledge and skills in a comprehensive manner.
All seem to benefit, right?
Empowerment is not easy to implement, the first resistance came from their own leadership and middle management, who may see it as a loss of status and importance, if the employees are those who take many decisions.
Once the direction is confident of launching this tool, you must clearly establish the relationships between all the disciplines that should exist (to confuse anyone who might have the freedom to do what the worker getting the win), and commitment to the system, so everyone is clear about it.
You must make the selection taking into account the personal empowerment (people with adequate capacity to meet the challenge), and should be undertaken the necessary training.
Empowerment can be very suitable for service companies (eg, hotels), but is a technique widely used in other sectors, for example in manufacturing in countries like Japan, with major benefits: employees motivated, many of ideas, consistency of individual goals and those of business, customer service (internal and external) exquisite …
